Effective Goal Setting, Visualize Your Goals, Part 3 of 3

By George L. Kenney

This is article three of a three part series, you'll want to read the first two in order for this to be more effective. This is a really fun exercise and once you use it a practice it on a regular basis, you will manifest your goals more rapidly. Please relax and enjoy this exercise.

After working with your goals for a day or so, you'll almost have them memorized. When that happens, you'll be ready for this step. Its easier to use this exercise if your goals are committed to memory.

Get in a comfortable position in a place where you won't be disturbed for ten or fifteen minutes. Keep your goal cards with you just in case you need them as a reference. Close your eyes and relax. Now start to picture your goals, one at a time. You'll be watching a "movie" of your goals actually happening. As you watch this happening on the theater screen of your mind, also feel as if it were truly happening. Run the movie as if each goal on your first card has already taken place, for example:

Its Wednesday, December 31, 200__. You are walking to the entrance of your bank to make a deposit. Its a beautiful day, bright blue sky with white puffy clouds. As you go into the bank, you can smell the freshly brewed coffee. You make your deposit and as you look at the deposit ticket you are in a state of awe - it shows the balance is just over $50,000.00. You've reached your goal!

You now have a vision of the new computer in your office, and you remember back to the day of the transaction, the soft music playing in the showroom of the store, the beautiful visual demonstration that the salesperson gave you, the bright and cheerful attitude of the check-out person and the receipt which shows that you paid cash for the computer on the day of purchase. You feel a sense of accomplishment that you were able to purchase exactly the computer and monitor you wanted and pay cash for the transaction. Now you're loading the computer in your vehicle and driving home. You unload the computer, set it up, and you feel the rush of adrenaline as you turn it on and put it through some tasks. You're thrilled by the speed of your new machine. Follow this by visualizing each of the goals on your first goal card.

Now take a couple of deep breaths to enjoy this feeling. As you do these visualization exercises you'll want to feel as many senses - what do you see, feel, taste, hear, smell, - as possible. Now move on to your next goal card and repeat the process. Be certain to take a couple of relaxing breaths in between each and let the wonderful feeling from each settle in before moving on. When you have completed this exercise with each of your goal cards, you will have pre-lived your goals, you will feel "as if" you have "lived" everything on your goal cards.

This is the last of a series of three articles about effective goal setting. Remember to use the S.M.A.R.T. method which I outlined in Part One, and to Bring Emotion to your goals as outlined in Part Two. When you follow those guidelines and add visualization exercises, you'll be more likely to reach your goals.
